Good afternoon, neighbors. I hope everyone has had enjoyable, yet HOT, summer. It went by fast, and now the kids are back in school, so please be aware that there are several bus stops in the mornings and afternoons primarily along Jack Frost Road.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, September 15th, at 7pm in the Shelton Park Elementary School cafeteria. This will be our first meeting of the 2026-2027 year. You can also go ahead and mark your calendars for November 17th for the next meeting. We invited Dominion Energy to be our guest speaker to explain their proposed merger and the sudden jump in electrical bills in early 2026, but they never replied to the multiple requests. We then invited the office of VB’s Commissioner of the Revenue to give a quick explanation of how the prepared meals and restaurant tax came about and where the money goes. There is a “grass roots” effort to repeal the entire 6% tax (which is in addition to the 6% sales tax) but no clear solution to how to cover the gap if it succeeded. The Commissioner finally contacted me Thursday evening stating he would not be able to attend the meeting, but still wanting to address the issue. We were not able to touch base on Friday, but hopefully we can before the meeting Tuesday and I can have an update.
But no worries—we still have plenty to discuss. The biggest news is the civic league is replacing the neighborhood signs at both ends of Jack Frost and Lake Shores Road at Shore. And when I say the civic league, it’s really Rick and Dodie who secured a substantial grant that paid for the not-so-insignificant cost, have already scraped and painted the posts, and are preparing the landscaping that the grant requires. But, wait, that’s not all. Mark your calendars for the afternoon of September 26th (that’s a Saturday) when their will be a community event in the SPES parking lot with music and vendors. Rick and Dodie will provide the details Tuesday, so please make sure to attend.
We’ve also invited our VBPD liaison to give a quick summary on what “interesting” things have happened in the neighborhood over the summer.
And we’re always looking for neighbors who want to be more involved in civic league planning and involvement. It’s not a lot of work, and new blood always vitalizes the organization. Currently, we need to fill one, three-year, trustee position. Trustee is a great way to get involved if you’ve not been involved before.
You’ll also be able to pay dues to our treasurer for 2026-2027. It’s only $10 per household, and you’ll need to be a member to vote on civic league business. Please remember to park in the back of Shelton Park Elementary School and enter the cafeteria through the two glass doors. Have a good weekend and we’ll see you on Tuesday.
