Our next civic league meeting is Tuesday, March 12th, 7:00 pm, in the Shelton Park Elementary School cafeteria (enter behind the school). Please see the attached map for parking.
We’ll be discussing the latest information about the rolling gate closures on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek over the next few months. In January, we had guest speakers from the city traffic engineering office to explain the schedule. Unfortunately, the community liaison officer for JEBLC had a schedule conflict and is not able to attend our meeting.
So far, the plan is:
Gate 1 – Shore Drive & Little Creek Road, construction from June 10 to July 19. Entry remains operational, but exit will be at gate 2, the old gate at Shore Drive and Diamond Springs Road.
Gate 3 – Shore Drive & Helicopter Rd/Lake Shores Road, closed from April 1 to May 3. Gate 4, the old Boone Clinic gate near Jack Frost and Shore will be open for exit as needed during construction, and will be left turn outbound as needed. We were told by the city that VBPD will enforce the “no right turn” on to Shore Drive.
Gate 5 – Shore Drive & Independence Blvd., construction will be May 4 to June 10. Inbound lanes will operate as usual, and exit will be at gate 3 and 4, with gate 4 having limited hours and no right turn. Gates 1 and 3 will be fully operational.
As most residents know, Lake Shores has a lot of cut-through traffic to and from the base. It’s mostly on Jack Frost, but when traffic gets backed up on Independence going to the main gate (gate 5), cars bail out to Shelton and School Roads to Jack Frost. Traffic also traverses down Tern to cross Shore Drive illegally from Lake Shores Road.
We’ll also ask for your ideas for programs and speakers. In the past we’ve had the Commonwealth’s Attorney discuss internet scams, a presentation on elder law issues (do you have a will AND revocable trust?), flood insurance, fire safety from the VBFD, and many others.
If you paid your dues earlier this year, you’re covered for the remaining three meetings before our summer break. It’s only $10 a year per household and you need to be a member to vote on any issues.
Please park in the rear of the school and access the cafeteria through the double glass doors.
