January 2025 Civic League Membership Meeting

We had to cancel our Lake Shores Civic League meeting earlier this month due to weather, so we’ve rescheduled it to February 11th.  We originally planned to punt to the 25 March meeting (note that it’s not our normal third Tuesday of the month but rather fourth Tuesday due to a previously scheduled event at SPES), but decided we should still have a meeting for our neighbors.  Everything else remains as planned—our speaker was flexible and can accommodate the change, and most importantly our neighborhood public school was as well—and we’ll meet in the cafeteria at 7pm.

We will have Ashton Holliday-Goulart, an extension agent from the Virginia Cooperative Extension, as our guest speaker.  You may ask yourself “what’s the Virginia Cooperative Extension, and why is that important to residents of Lake Shores?”  Those are two good questions.  One is she will provide information on the Hampton Roads Agriculture Research Extension Center, that expansive undeveloped area bordered by Northampton to the south, Baker Road to the east, and Diamond Springs to the north.  Some of you may remember a proposal a couple of years ago to swap land and move the AREC to the Pungo, area and develop the current property with more housing.  Ashton will also discuss the work of the Virginia Cooperative Extension, and also speak to the Master Gardener program.

Some folks have asked about having a speaker from the Master Gardeners come to one our meetings, however we’d like to gauge the interest since their presentations are focused on specific topics and can be 45 to 60 minutes long.  You can see a list of speaker bureau presentations here.

We’ll have our normal membership meeting with committee reports, Neighborhood Watch, minutes from the previous meeting, and any new business after our speaker, and will be entertaining nominations for officer positions in the civic league as well as trustees.  Voting will be conducted at our March meeting with officers assuming their positions in May.

Our treasurer will also be happy to take dues for the rest of the 2024-2025 year.  It’s only $10 a year per household and you need to be a member to vote on any issues.

Please park in the rear of the school and access the cafeteria through the double glass doors.  Please see the map on this post.
